Fuel compatibility
Wood Chip Fired Steam Boilers for Industrial Factories: A Buyer’s Guide
Buying a wood chip fired steam boiler involves both a steam project and a fuel-supply plan. A factory should define the wood it will receive, the steam it needs and who supplies each part of the handling system before comparing equipment prices.

Start with the wood chips delivered to your factory
The U.S. EPA’s biomass technology catalogue explains that fuel moisture affects the energy available for steam production, while particle preparation influences reliable feeding. A wood-fired boiler proposal therefore needs more information than the fuel name.
Identify the wood source and provide a representative laboratory analysis. Specify moisture and heating-value reporting bases, ash content and particle-size distribution. Describe bark, fines and any contamination separately. Do not assume that pellets, sawdust and mixed wood waste are interchangeable with the proposed chips.

Plan supply, storage and fuel handling as one system
Record how much fuel each supplier can deliver, how often deliveries arrive and what changes during the wet season. Ask for representative samples from the actual supply chain. Keep the fuel specification attached to both the boiler enquiry and the fuel-purchasing discussion.
Prepare a layout showing the unloading area, storage, preparation equipment and route to the boiler. Confirm which party designs and supplies each interface. Use the following questions to make quotations comparable:
- Is screening or size reduction included, and what incoming material is it designed for?
- How are fuel quality, inventory and delivery interruptions recorded?
- What access is needed for cleaning, inspection and maintenance?
- Who coordinates the storage and handling design with the site’s responsible engineers?
Match the steam boiler to the production schedule
For a textile, food, paper or other industrial factory, provide normal steam demand, peaks and the lowest expected operating load. State the required working pressure and whether the process needs saturated or superheated steam. Include operating hours and planned production changes.
Compare the biomass steam boiler product options against that brief. Ask the supplier to state the design fuel and output conditions in the proposal, including any additional information needed before confirming wood-chip suitability.
Check installation experience and manufacturing qualifications
Review completed industrial boiler installations to understand the supplier’s project-delivery experience. Ask which references used fuel comparable to yours. A biomass pellet or palm-waste installation can demonstrate a completed project, but it does not establish performance on your wood-chip specification.
Check manufacturing licences and certificate records, then request current documents for the offered equipment. Clarify commissioning guidance, operator familiarisation, maintenance information and spare-parts ordering before comparing the final supply scope.
What to send with a wood chip boiler enquiry
Combine the fuel analysis, delivery photographs, estimated annual supply and storage layout with the production-line steam brief. Add the project location, installation schedule and the contact responsible for technical clarification. Clearly identify figures still awaiting measurement or laboratory confirmation.
For a wider comparison, read the biomass boiler fuel compatibility guide. Keep any proposed fuel substitution subject to review instead of treating a general biomass description as approval for every available residue.
