Biomass Steam Boiler for Palm Oil Mills: Fuel and Project Planning

A biomass steam boiler for a palm oil mill should be selected around the processing schedule and the fuel the mill can reliably supply. For factory owners and EPC teams, the key purchasing decisions are steam duty, residue preparation, equipment scope and support after commissioning.

Define the mill’s steam demand before choosing capacity

Start with fresh fruit bunch processing capacity, operating hours and the steam requirements supplied by the process equipment vendors. List the pressure and steam demand for each user, including whether duties run together or in batches. Record production peaks separately from average consumption.

For a palm oil factory boiler project, distinguish process steam from any proposed power-generation duty. If a turbine is included, send its steam requirements with the process brief so the engineering team can review the complete steam balance.

Specify palm kernel shell, fibre and other residues

The Malaysian Palm Oil Board documents the use of mesocarp fibre and palm kernel shell as mill boiler fuels. This is a useful industry reference, but it does not define the blend or operating conditions for a new installation.

Prepare separate records for shell, fibre and any proposed empty fruit bunch fuel. State whether the material is fresh, stored, shredded or otherwise processed. Ask the supplier to confirm the preparation and feeding requirements for each proposed fuel stream.

  • Available quantity by season, including residues committed to other uses.
  • Representative fuel analysis, moisture basis and proposed blend proportions.
  • Delivery method, storage arrangement and the route to the boiler house.

Compare the complete biomass boiler package

Review the biomass-fired steam boiler range, then request a proposal against the mill’s own fuel specification and steam duty. Ask what output conditions are included in the offer and how they will be demonstrated during acceptance.

Make the supply boundary explicit for conveyors, fuel preparation, ash removal, water treatment, flue-gas treatment and controls. Assign responsibility for foundations, electrical connections and steam piping. A package comparison should also identify installation guidance, operator familiarisation and the first spare-parts order.

Review a 20 t/h palm-waste boiler project in Indonesia

Huayuan’s Indonesia palm oil mill project uses a 20 t/h palm-waste biomass boiler, model SHW20-2.5/400-T. This completed installation provides a relevant starting point for discussions about equipment arrangement and project delivery.

Share the questions you want to discuss before arranging a reference-site visit. Confirm access and availability with the project team. Use the reference to assess the supplier’s experience, while specifying the capacity, fuel and operating conditions of your own mill separately.

Prepare a focused palm oil mill boiler enquiry

Send the project country, process capacity, steam schedule, available fuel analysis and a preliminary site plan. Mark figures that are estimated. Include the target commissioning period and whether the enquiry covers a new boiler house, replacement equipment or an expansion.

Review boiler manufacturing qualifications and certificate records and request the current documents relevant to the proposed equipment. Agree the installation responsibilities, spare-parts scope and acceptance requirements in the technical proposal.
